At times, you stumble upon such wonderful little hotels in stunning locations of countries you had very little knowledge of. But what’s even more inspiring is what you don’t see at the hotel, the hotel’s mission of giving back to the community through supporting school for the local children. As their way of “paying back” to people and environment around them for the “privilege of borrowing” their land in pursuit of something good. This is the quintessential “do good hotel” in my book. For this inspiring hotel, we went all the way to a small landlocked country in Africa, Malawi. The hotel is Kaya Mawa, and their Island Child program offers comprehensive support in various areas, from local schools, orphanages, building water tanks, to HIV/AIDS awareness.

Places to relax, enjoy time with your family and think about what’s really important in life” don’t get much more “idyllic” than the island resorts of Lake Malawi, says Will Hide in the Times.

The lake is vast, dominating the landlocked southeast African country that shares its name, and so remote that you’ll encounter few other visitors on its marvellous beaches of pale, powdery sand or in its crystal-clear waters.

The resort of Kaya Mawa on Likoma Island is blissful, with its “ten stylish stone and teak cottages”, but that on Mumbo Island is more “heavenly” still. Guests stay in “luxurious, eco-friendly tents on headlands overlooking the water”, which sparkles at night with dozens of tiny lights – the lamps of distant fishermen’s canoes.
