MolokaiMuleRide500x491It is often said that experiences requiring the most effort are those that supply a lifetime of memories. Such is the case with The Moloka’i Guided Mule & Historical Park Tour to Kalaupapa National Historic Park.

Considered a sacred place, the park requires special permission for entry. Those wishing to visit can enlist in a guided hike or let a mule do the walking. Still, having a mule undertake the trek doesn’t make for an easy trip. Those jittery of heights may find the 2.9-mile journey with it’s 26 switchbacks down a 1,700-foot sea cliff daunting. The rewards, however, are vast.

A Damien Tours guide meets riders for a bus tour to share the history of the settlement where people suffering from Hansen’s Disease, or leprosy, were placed in isolation fr 1866 until 1969. A stop is made at St. Philomena Catholic Church to visit the honorary gravesite of Joseph De Veuster, the man known as Father Damien, a beloved Belgian priest who devoted his life to the settlement. Time for reflection can be had over a picnic lunch in Judd Park, where views of the North Shore Cliffs National Landmark, the world’s tallest sea cliff’s at 2,000 feet tall, serve as a reminder on the return trip and more awe-inspiring vistas that wait.
