Sleek & Chic | Riad Dar Sabra, Dar Sabra_La Palmeraïe, Marrakech, Morocco

August 26, 2010

If this hotel feels more like a modern hacienda of an eccentric collector of Lichtenstein pop art in Mexico, you’re not alone. Riad Dar Sabra is the farthest removed hotel concept you’d find in Marrakech, that looks nothing like your typical Moroccan hotel.

An avant-garde hotel devoted to contemporary art, its cubist and colorful style was more of an ode to Mexican architects Legorreta and Barragan.

Conceived by hotelier-owner Francis Chapoutat in collaboration with the art critic Gerard Xuriguera, the Riad Dar Sabra was designed to celebrate sculpture and modern art.

In one corner, you’ll be greeted by a cow, created by artist Richard Di Rosa, while in the hotel grounds, a gorilla stands proudly, and a pile of oversized colored letters with the hotel’s name embody the unique design approach.

But the most surprising factor is probably the pool (olympic size!) spanned by an arch designed by Italian artist Mauro Staccioli. Reflecting in the water, it offers a perfect red oval, forming a kiss.
